This collection of essays by Rihani compares aspects of East and West. The essays are grouped into two parts: the first focuses largely on America, while the second deals with Lebanon and the Levant. Rihani seeks to engage the true heroes of the new world whom he sees as the agents of the "World-Spirit." He introduces three American writers who most influenced him, viz, Walt Whitman, Henri David Thoreau, and Ralf Waldo Emerson. A recurring theme in these essays is to return "spiritual science" to the Orient.
